Pretty Nifty — The Pretty Reckless Rock The Ryman on Their “Dear God” Tour

Fresh off the release of their critically acclaimed fifth studio album, Dear God, The Pretty Reckless look to capitalize off of its success with their first Ryman headline in over a decade. It has been a few years since The Pretty Reckless have graced Music City with any sort of headline show, last playing The Cowan, a now defunct venue in Germantown, back in October of 2021. Since then, the band has been back around as direct support, notably in 2022 with Shinedown and 2025 with AC/DC at Nissan Stadium.

Kicking off the night with “Death By Rock And Roll,” the title track and opening number from the band’s 2021 long-play, The Pretty Reckless are already in high gear. It is a dramatic, classic rock-tinged hard-hitter, with Ben Phillips tearing into his six string with a frenzy. Frontwoman Taylor Momsen is electric here, delivering a bombastic, arena-ready vocal performance to get the crowd energized. It is a blistering opener that leaves listeners salivating for more.

Throwing it back to their debut, the band quickly shift into 2011’s “Since You’re Gone.” Coming in on the tail end of the 2000’s hard rock revival, The Pretty Reckless have an added edge on this track. Bassist Mark Damon comes through loud and clear, not only driving the song but also adding a flair of grit with his distorted chugging. Bouncing off of Damon is Jamie Perkins on drums, with the duo quickly putting the subwoofers to work. Their back and forth is eerily reminiscent of the garage and blues rock of the era, think early Black Keys, just with the added bite of Momsen on vocals. Speaking of Momsen, she’s taken full control of the stage by this point, effortlessly strutting edge to edge like a predator ready to lash out. Graced with the freedom of a wireless mic and her voice as her lone instrument, Momsen has no strings holding her back from electrifying the crowd.

Toning things down sonically, the band rounds of their opening foray with “Follow Me Down” from 2014’s Going to Hell. Swapping out some of the instrumental edge for a more lyrical dose, “Follow Me Down” is sultry and provocative. The audience was greeted with the song’s notoriously crass opening recording, which was soon crushed by the band’s impending momentum. Momsen has also loosened up, trading in her thick leather jacket for a grunge-inspired flannel. While her aesthetic might be firmly planted in the 90’s, her voice feels ripped from the 80’s with streaks of hair metal and power metal. It is a swelling power, a stark contrast to the crunchy riffs being laid down by Phillips and Damon. But Momsen is not a one trick pony and is incredibly dynamic with her vocal, seamlessly shifting into a smooth, sensual performance for the bridge. As a frontwoman, Momsen has no problem conveying the band’s sound with her performance, ebbing and flowing on stage as the music directs. She has the star power you seek when looking for a vocalist.
