Durand Jones & The Indications Return to Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl

Out in support of their fourth studio album, Flowers, Durand Jones & The Indications have returned to the Music City after three years away. The group’s last romp in Nashville saw them opening for Greta Van Fleet at Bridgestone arena and their last headline play in town was back in 2022, also at Brooklyn Bowl.

Groovy, sultry, and caressed in an effortless swagger, Durand Jones leads the band with “Really Wanna Be With You,” a silky-smooth soul true layered with longing. Paired with the band’s backing vocals, Jones swells into a dynamic chorus with intricate percussion and frolicking keys. Despite its lower tones, the chorus feels absolutely massive. Jones is fierce yet caring, the instrumentation is soft yet punchy, and the whole band was in absolute lockstep. It is an early reminder of the vocal skills present across the band as Jones and the band continue to trade back and forths, it is enough to leave you slack-jawed.

Taking a backseat, Jones leaves the stage as drummer and co-vocalists Aaron Frazer takes center stage for “Is It Any Wonder?”. Fazier’s falsetto is an immediate ear-grab, it is tender and oh-so delicate. Simultaneously, listeners are drawn to Frazier’s drumming, an already notable part of the set, and the immense restraint he shows. Light, gentle taps punch through the subtle guitar. This was the band’s first breakout hit and its vintage 60’s-inspired nostalgia brings a swelling comfort, covering the crowd like a blanket.

Unafraid to lean into the excitement, the band end their set on “Witchoo,” a psychedelic whirlwind from their album Private Space. Horns, gang vocals, and synthesizers highlight this one as Jones and Frazier lay down some downright incredible vocals. It is groovy, exhilarating, and downright infectious. The Indications are no jokes on this one, with the band showing in full force. Notably the bass, present all night, makes a significant jump into the track. This track truly is a punctuating moment to one of the best live performances you’ll see.

If there was any doubt how infectious The Indications left, then I think the trek an Illinois family took should cast it away. After hearing “Flower Moon” on their local radio the week prior, the family of three immediately knew they had to see the band. Making the drive from south Illinois, the trio landed front row, dead center to see their new favorite act. Flowers seems to have quickly become a new fan-favorite album.

Durand Jones & The Indications still have a lot of miles to cover before they wrap up their tour in November, with stops in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and another twenty or so markets dotting their road map. You can find tickets to all of the group’s upcoming dates here.
