Steve Lacy Doesn’t Bite His Tongue, He Has a Silver Tongue

It’s been over three years since Steve Lacy has graced Nashville’s stages. That was in the summer of 2023 during the Re:Set concert series, Lacy’s last true headline show in Music City came in 2022 at Marathon Music Works. So it should come as no surprise that the pent-up demand saw this show, over double the capacity of his last, mind you, sell-out in under five minutes.

Lacy kicked the night off with a full album play of Oh yeah?, his third studio album that came out in July. Songs such as “pure colour” and “nothing” immediately made waves with their suave delivery and intricate live instrumentation. The album has notched a lot of critical praise and fans were more than eager to hear the new tracks live, with lines starting hours in advance and circling the block of Nashville’s second largest indoor venue. Lacy elected to forego an opener with this tour, instead electing to deliver a 36-song tirade across his discography.

While the night was certainly focused on Oh yeah? (and for good reason, the album is one to watch out for in numerous Grammy categories), Lacy still put up an impressive batch of songs alongside his album playthrough. Early favorites like “C U Girl” and “Dark Red” were easy fan-favorites, alongside a performance of Kendrick Lamar’s “PRIDE.,” a song Lacy contributed backing vocals to on the recording. But without a doubt, the highlight of this segment was “Bad Habit,” Lacy’s 2022 crossover hit that launched his career into the stratosphere. While the die-hard fans who braved the Ticketmaster war were belting every word of the deep cuts, “Bad Habit” was a song that everyone knew, it was inescapable for several years. To no one’s surprise, Lacy’s performance was incredible, not only was his vocal delivery top notch, Lacy was also just a stellar performer on stage, easily controlling that rabid crowd with expert precision.

Lacy would end the night on a spiritual journey, a psychedelic-funk neo-soul concoction that saw the singer revisit “the feeling” three times before capping the night with a reprise of “oh yeah?.” The former of those two songs struck like an instant classic, with its earwormy chorus caked in atmospheric vocals and a downright groovy bass line. While on a paper a three-peat of a song already featured earlier in the setlist may sound repetitive, Lacy does an excellent job of evolving the song, driving it forward more akin to an extended cut of the song rather than a simple do-over.

Steve Lacy is one of the most exciting voices in music today. Lacy’s sound is so viscerally unique, his blend of R’n’B, indie rock, funk, neo-soul, psychedelic, and just about any other sound he can conjure up is unlike any other artist making music today, let alone those touring on the road. His vocal delivery is also outright stellar, with his silver tongue lashing out and drawing the audience’s ears in—it cannot be understated just how awe-inspiring his range is live. This is a must-see show for any music fan.
