Charlie Puth is Still America’s Vocal Golden Boy

Charlie Puth returns to Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater for the first time in over three years in support of his new album, Whatever’s Clever!.
Kicking off the night with “Beat Yourself Up,” the second single from Whatever’s Clever!, it is clear Puth hasn’t missed a beat. Clear and bright, Charlie dances across the groove of the track, his perfect pitch having no trouble fighting through the dense humidity of Middle Tennessee’s summer air. It has become almost exhaustive at this point, with Puth’s vocal ability being talked about at length on the internet for the past decade, but it really does stand out amongst the crowd. Even live, a space that leave little to no room for error, Puth excels on every line. “Beat Yourself Up” is a vibrantly dynamic song, adding to the challenge facing Puth. It certainly made for an exciting introduction.

Switching gears into “How Long,” the three-times platinum single from 2017’s Voicenotes, Puth seems eager to remind the crowd that while he is celebrating his new album, his back catalog is not to be trifled with. Puth has become one of pop music’s strongest singer-songwriters, penning eight RIAA platinum tracks just for his solo career. That is an incredible feat, and it certainly shows throughout Puth’s setlist, with countless songs immediately catching your ear in a seamlessly nostalgic way. “How Long” is certainly one of those tunes, encapsulating Puth’s early career into an effortlessly breezy dance track. Now over a decade on, Puth still has a mastery of the pop lane.
It is nearly a joke nowadays, but the expectation with shows in Nashville is that there is always a special guest lurking side stage. It’s a trope, really, especially when seeing a country artist in town. Charlie Puth, to his credit, has made this a tradition at all of his live shows, not just Nashville. Recent memory brings T-Pain, Art Garfunkel, and even Jimmy Fallon to mind. Now, while not a country musician himself, it is clear that Puth has a great appreciate for the genre, as he brought out not one, not two, but three icons of the genre in Kenny Whitmire, Lee Ann Womack, and the legendary Vince Gill. While certainly a showman, Puth was more than eager to give up the spotlight, covering each respective artist’s song with them, showcasing the immense wealth of talent in the city. It really is a special moment, seeing unexpected collaboration between artists in a live setting. These moments were the highlight of the night.

While only a handful of dates across Texas are left on the North American leg of Puth’s world tour, he still has a long ways to go until he reaches the end. Just a week separates the end of his Texas run and the start of his six week sprint across Europe. After that, Charlie will have a short break before an extensive run through Asia and Oceania. It is extraordinarily clear that Charlie Puth is a generational talent. Not only is he a top-notch songwriter with numerous multi-platinum singles, but he remains one of the best vocalists in popular music. Puth also surrounds himself with expert musicians, his backing band is one of the best in the business and he consistently brings out some of music’s most iconic performers every night. Go grab a ticket to one of his shows, if you’re a music fan I promise you it will be worth it.
