Pretty Nifty — 5 Seconds of Summer Are The Boyband of The Year

On the heels of 2025’s EVERYONE’S A STAR!, 5 Seconds of Summer are on top of the world. It’s their first tour as a band since 2023, a run that saw them hit Central Tennessee’s FirstBank Amphitheater. Now, two and a half years later, they’ve returned to Bridgestone Arena for their biggest production in Nashville to date.

Racing in at fifth gear, 5 Seconds of Summer waste no time getting the night rolling. Emerging from the top of their oversized pink limo, the band jump right into “NOT OK,” the lead single from EVERYONE’S A STAR!. It is chaotic, full of life, and downright exhilarating, with Luke Hemmings taking point on the first two verses. He’s fast paced, moving with effortless momentum and a carefree swagger. “NOT OK” was a notable departure from the band’s past output, leaning into scuzzier guitars, snappier drums, and a generally more left-of-center sound. This compounds on the chorus, as the rest of the company join in anthemically. It feels momentous, with the sheer bombast hitting you directly in the chest. On the chorus, there’s a bounciness from Calum Hood’s bass line, something that quickly caught on with the crowd has they slammed into motion. This wasn’t isolated either, later in the night after I had ventured into the 300s, I noticed the unrelenting motion of the crowd. From the rafters of the arena the room looked like an ocean swelling, with fans even in the steepest parts of the room dancing along without a care in the world.

Fresh off of their PowerPoint intermission, a rather goofy bout of inside jokes, general gabbing, and audience connection, the band pivot into their 2015 hit “She’s Kinda Hot,” a jangly, acoustic-led pop-rock anthem. The song had barely begun by the time the audience was singing along in full force. Trading off vocals on a whim, all four of the band members take on singing duties here, switching out on verses with ease. However, it is Michael Clifford at centerstage, maybe not as the point on vocals, but certainly in entertainment. He has no problem drawing in the crowd, lighting up the crowd and getting them all-in on the song. He’s dynamic, showcasing a masterclass in stage presence, a skill neither him nor his bandmates seemed to lack throughout the entire show.

“Telephone Busy” was Ashton Irwin’s time to shine, with the drummer, typically tethered to his kit, venturing out down the catwalk to a secondary throne. Touching on that catwalk briefly, it was clear this was the band’s highest level of production in the states yet, with a massive circular walkway surrounding the mainstage and extending out into the crowd. Thematically their whole stage felt cohesive, leaning into the ‘rise and fall’ storyline they painted throughout the night. Back to “Telephone Busy,” it is a high-contrast, low-fi boil, shifting in and out of dense, action-pack verses and dreamy, atmospheric verses. Much like “NOT OK,” it was a single from EVERYONE’S A STAR! and it shows. This new album feels incredibly refreshing, showcasing a lot of growth not just lyrically as they dive into darker subjects, but sonically as the band kicks any notion of staleness wide open.

5 Seconds of Summer still have a lot of gas left in the tank, with nearly three dozen more stops across North America, including top-line billing at this year’s Lollapalooza. After that, the band will sprint across South America before hopping back over the pond to their native Oceania. They’ll then wrap their year with an extensive South Asian tour.

This was an awesome show, just plain and simple. 5 Seconds of Summer have no shortage of star power, and they put it to use with incredible precision. Now fifteen years into their career, it is clear that they are a well-oiled machine. The production is bigger, the songs are fresh and exciting, and the band is clearly having a good time, as is the audience. Don’t write this show off as a rehash of the 2010’s boyband craze, this is 5 Seconds of Summer’s second coming.
